Review Scarlet Sister Mary

Oh my goodness, "Scarlet Sister Mary"—what a ride! I went into this Pulitzer Prize-winning novel from 1929 with some trepidation, honestly. I've read some…let's say challenging Pulitzer winners, and I wasn't sure what to expect. But from the very first pages, I was captivated by Mary's story. It's a beautifully written book, even if the dialect took a little getting used to at first. Once I adjusted, however, the rhythm of the language became almost hypnotic – I could practically hear the voices of the characters.

The descriptions of rural Southern life in the early 20th century are simply stunning. Peterkin paints such a vivid picture, you feel like you’re right there in the midst of the Blue Brook Plantation, experiencing the heat, the dust, and the close-knit community, both its warmth and its harsh judgments. It's a fascinating glimpse into a time and place so different from our own.

Mary herself is a complex and unforgettable character. She's deeply religious, yet she's also a woman with desires and passions that clash with the rigid expectations of her society and her faith. Her struggles, her internal conflicts, her choices – they all resonate so deeply. She's not perfect; in fact, she makes some seriously questionable decisions, but her resilience in the face of adversity is truly inspiring. It made me think a lot about societal pressures on women, especially Black women, during that era. The weight of those expectations is palpable throughout the book.

There's a raw honesty to Mary's story, an unflinching look at sexuality, faith, and the hypocrisy that sometimes hides behind religious piety. It's not a comfortable read in some ways, but it’s a profoundly insightful one. The themes explored – race, gender, morality – are timeless and deeply relevant even today. The book challenges you to think about what it means to be a "good" woman, what it means to live authentically, and how easily judgments can cloud our perceptions of others.

I completely understand why some readers found the dialect challenging, and I can see why it might have caused controversy back in 1929. However, I found that it added a significant layer of authenticity to the narrative. It was a stylistic choice that, to my ears at least, worked exceptionally well in conveying the setting and the characters’ voices. It’s a book that stays with you long after you've finished reading it. I found myself thinking about Mary and her choices for days afterward. It’s one of those novels that you might pick up again years later and have a completely different experience with. It truly is a testament to Peterkin's skill as a writer. It’s a brilliantly crafted exploration of human nature, and I highly recommend it – though perhaps not to someone looking for a light and fluffy read!
